Meet Fundación SalBo, Innovating Cervical Cancer Screening for Colombian Women

Cervical cancer is one cancer we know how to prevent. Screening for HPV can ensure that a woman at higher risk for cervical cancer can be identified and referred to necessary preventive services long before she’s at risk of developing this deadly disease. 

Unfortunately, even the best available screening strategies may not be ideal for women in certain contexts, such as those living in rural areas, where screening options may be difficult to access, if they are available at all. 

Addressing these limitations brings us one step closer to ending this avoidable cancer. That’s why TogetHER for Health is supporting a partnership researching an innovative new strategy in Colombia that could make cervical cancer screening easier for women in underserved areas to access.

Our latest video spotlight focuses on 2025-2026 Cervical Cancer Grants Program awardee Fundación SalBo, who are collaborating with INMUBO Research at Universidad El Bosque to test the use of urine-based samples for HPV DNA detection. This non-invasive screening alternative to more established methods such as Pap tests offers a potentially more acceptable means to test women for high-risk HPV strains. Because women can sample themselves, urine-based screening would reduce the number of women needing to travel to a health facility for a cervical screening.
